The story is enticingâ€"a young person or previously responsible parent goes astray and succumbs to the ravages of alcohol or drugs, is confronted by caring friends and family, and in just one episode, realizes the error of their ways and turns their life around, often through a miraculous yet accessible treatment program. But is the reality really as simple as reality TV would have us believe? Although shows featuring real-life interventions are helpful in giving hope to addicts and their families, and showing that change is possible, they don’t necessarily reflect an accurate view of reality, either for the individuals involved or how an intervention could turn out for those considering an intervention for someone they care about. Do Interventions Work? The term intervention can be confusing because it can be used to refer to the various therapeutic approaches used to treat addiction, many of which are evidence-based  and effective. These include motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and couples therapy. These evidence-based  treatments  and several others, typically take time and commitment on the part of the addicted person but are generally helpful. What we are discussing in this article is not a treatment per se, but rather, a planned attempt by a group of people to persuade someone they are in a relationship with to either quit alcohol or drugs on their own or to seek treatment. This process may be led and guided by an interventionist who is hired by the family or group. An intervention may not be done in an aggressive way,  although sometimes it is accompanied by expression of anger about past wrongdoings of the addicted person, and threats to discontinue or seriously limit the relationship, but it is always in some way confrontationalâ€"even if the confrontation is presented as an invitation, which generally is not effective in overcoming addiction. From a professional standpoint, interventions cannot be recommended, simply because there is not enough research available to support their effectiveness. That doesn’t mean they can’t be effective; it just means that the studies we need in order to “prove” the effectiveness of interventions has not yet been carried out. While a few studies were conducted on the effectiveness of interventions in getting people into treatment during the late 20th century, they typically showed that family members chose not to follow through on confronting their family members. One study showed that when they did follow through, they were able to get their family member into treatment, but in the end, this was a very small number of people, and the outcome of therapy was not reported. Bear in mind that all therapies, no matter how effective, were at one time unproven, went through experimental stages and refinements, were funded for research, and finally, enough studies were conducted showing their effectiveness that they became accepted the practice. But just because they are accepted practice doesn’t mean they are guaranteed to work for everyone. From an anecdotal perspective, interventions have mixed reviews. Some clinicians have had the experience of working with people whose families have conducted interventions that have been helpful in persuading their loved one to get help. Others have had much more negative reviews, in which the intervention was poorly conducted or the addicted individual was not in a place to hear the feedback, and it caused an even greater problem for the addicted individual and an even greater rift in their family. So how do you know whether an intervention  is going to help the person you care about? What seems to be the crucial factor is the experience and skill of the interventionist leading the interventionâ€"perhaps this is why interventions appear so successful on TV shows with large budgets, the best-trained experts, and teams of professionals providing backup support to the individual and family. But in the real world, we have no current systems for evaluating the credentials of interventionists, nor for providing backup if needed, so there is very little information on which to base your decision. Why Would People Use Interventions If They Dont Work? Interventions for addiction are big business, especially in the United States, where they are often portrayed on TV. In desperation, families of people with addictions pour their life savings into interventions, hoping to save a loved one who seems to no longer see reason. Yet the basis of interventions is more about hype than about true recoveryâ€"reality TV is not in the healthcare business, it is in the entertainment business, and the drama of a carefully orchestrated and edited video story of confrontation and redemption is very appealing to the modern American audience. Part of why interventions are so appealing, and also, so unlikely to be effective, is that they offer the dream of a simple solution to an incredibly complex situation. We know from decades of research that people do not become addicted purely by nature or nurture, but a complex interplay between the two. Typically, someone with an addiction is struggling with underlying issues that they may not even be aware of, issues that an interventionist or well-meaning family member are even less likely to be aware of. Although a proportion of people are able to overcome severe addictions on their own, it takes great determination and access to alternative ways of coping to do this. For many others, overcoming addiction requires treatment, and it often takes many attempts to completely quit alcohol and drugs. Of course, this does not mean that people are never helped by an intervention. The process of becoming aware that your behavior is harming yourself, and those around you, is an important step towards recovery, and the first step through the stages of change from pre-contemplation to contemplation. However, confronting someone with an addiction is a very risky approach, and can just as easily backfire, making the addicted person feel attacked, alienated, and misunderstood instead of feeling supported. In these cases, an intervention can even worsen an addiction, causing the person to seek comfort in alcohol and drugs, and to seek out the company of those who understandâ€"drinking and drugging buddies and drug dealers. The Different Stages of How to Overcome Addiction Factors to Consider in Choosing an Interventionist If, after considering the lack of research support, you still feel an intervention might be right for your loved one, here are some common-sense considerationsâ€"NOT based on medical fact or researchâ€"to think about in making the decision to employ an interventionist: Do you know anyone who was helped by the interventionist? If so, were their problems similar to those of the person you care about? Were their characteristics (such as age, culture, and how long they have had the addiction) similar? A personal recommendation from someone dealing with similar issues is often a way that people make decisions about therapists.Talk to the interventionist. Did you develop a good rapport? Do they seem to understand the problems you are describing? Do you get a good “gut feeling” from this person?What is the financial investment? How much do you stand to lose if it doesn’t work out? Could these funds be used on a different program that offers more credibility? Remember that although many people working in the addictions field know what they are doing and genuinely want to help their clients, there are others out there who just want your money, and will prey on the desperation felt by loved ones who are looking for a miracle cure. There are no miracle cures, and overcoming addiction is hard work, especially for the addicts themselves. Alternatives to an Intervention The best approach to treating an addiction depends on a great many factors, including the substance being used, how severe the addiction is, the addicted persons attitude towards treatment and quitting or cutting down, and whether they have concurrent mental and/or physical health problems. A physician is often in the best position to discuss this with the person with the addiction, although many physicians do not have a great deal of training or expertise in addiction, and some are not comfortable working with people with addictions. The American Board of Addiction Medicine provides specialized training and certification for physicians, and so an ABAM certified physician is a great person to help people with an addiction find the right treatment, as well as provide a great deal of treatment themselves. You might also want to consider finding out about other treatment options for your loved one: DetoxMotivational interviewingResidential treatmentSelf-help groups, such as SMART recovery and Sober24 Communicating With Your Loved One Communication with your loved one is important in building and maintaining the trust that is required to support them in recovery. Often, trust in relationships can be badly damaged during an addiction, as the addicted person will often feel it necessary to keep their addictive behavior secret from their loved ones, often believing this is for their own good. Then, when the loved one discovers the addictive behavior or is faced with some of the negative consequences of the addiction, they typically feel betrayed and angry. You may not be able to persuade or bully your loved one into treatment, and in fact, trying to do so may actually make both their addiction and your relationship worse. On the other hand, honest and clear communication is typically very helpful. Setting boundaries around what kinds of behavior cross the line and are unacceptable, and making it clear that you have your own life and needs are extremely important in relationships with people who have addictions. This is often not easy, although knowing what not to say to someone with a drug addiction, and these tips on how to help an addicted friend or relative may be helpful.

Michael Moore’s documentary is a courageous attempt to unfold the damages, caused by Capitalistic mentality of the time – laying off 30,000 auto workers in an American city, Flint for the sheer purpose of profit. Moore’s presentation unfold the pathos of a society, suffers through the years of loss and sorrow. Moore shows in his documentary film the apathy and coldness of the riches and the devastation and anguish for the poors. He exemplified a resident, who lost her job from GM plants, started raising rabbits for income and what Roger Smith did to the people of Flint, sums up the relationship between the employer and their employees. The rabbit woman states she raises the rabbits to the age of four months and then kills them; that way, they are nice and tender. At one point in the interview, she is holding a rabbit, caressing it ever so softly and then states indirectly that this one will be her dinner. She proceeds to kill, skin, and gut the rabbit in front of the camera. This leaves a haunting visual image in the mind of the viewer, showing that there is no difference from what GM has done to Flint and what she does to rabbits. What employers cannot understand is that human beings are not like rabbits and should not be treated as such. General Motors chairman Roger B. Smith announced the closure of Flint Auto plants and to shift to Mexico for cheaper labor. GM’s board of directors, led by Roger Smith, decided to move to Mexico to reduce the wage and benefit expense of GM. Showing this; it was obvious that lots of Americans are socially brain-washed into believing that global competition and corporate downsizing is good for America. In terms of jobs within a country, supreme executive authority gets a mandate from the citizens of the state, not from the corporations. Corporations, especially Corporate America, have usually nothing to do with the livelihood of the work force to gain economic power. It is much more interested in the stockholder’s profit margin. Why do we allow corporations to replace our liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for the individual in favor of the stockholder? How can the employees even know what their rights are, if they are working in excess of 50 hours a week? Isn’t it about time we start changing the basic structure of corporate America? We may restrict US corporations to own or lease, stock or property in foreign countries and to keep foreign corporations from manipulating the US economy. Any foreign corporation must not to be allowed to own or lease, stock or property in America. This way we could reverse the trend of outsourcing jobs to the cheapest third world country, force corporations to start manufacturing products within their own nation, and stop corporations from dictating policy in their own country and other nations. Moore shows in his movie how riches get richer and poor get poorer. This is a sad depiction of Corporate America. This closure of GM auto factories cost hundreds and thousands job-loss; lack of funds at Municipal level to use for welfare of the residents; and run the city’s general works. Despite of GM decision-making of its move to Mexico, Chrysler, Chief, Iacocca, borrowed money from US Government to regain his dying company. He would have a choice to leave US and find cheaper labor in Mexico, but he introduced two affordable cars for general public. Chrysler did a great business and paid off all loans and gain lots of profit. It created jobs and circulate money within US. On the other hand, greedy, GM chairman, Smith, moved out to Mexico to have cheaper labor in cost of socio-economic fiasco in Flint, Michigan. The city has not enough funds to spend on garbage removal. The city health department holds a press conference and announces that the rat population in Flint has surpassed the human census. The department blames it on the fact that the city can only afford to pick up the garbage twice a month and offers a bounty for every dead rat brought in by a city resident. Eventually, Moore approached Smith and confronted to ask him to visit Flint and could see the devastation by himself. He mentioned how the residents of Flint, who couldn’t pay their rent, were evicted from their houses. Moore failed to convince, GM Chairman, Smith to bring him in Flint. The V-Chip On February 8, 1996, President Clinton signed into law the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which dramatically altered the telecommunications industry over the next several years. One of the most controversial sections of the bill was Section 551, titled "Parental Choice in Television Programming," which calls for manufacturers to include a "V-chip" in every new TV set 13 inches or larger. The V-chip is a device that will enable viewers to program their televisions to block out content with a common rating. Proponents of the system say that it will enable parents to protect their children from viewing violent and explicit material. Opponents say it violates the First Amendment rights of the broadcasters, and enforces government censorship on the television industry. Even though the President has already signed the V-chip legislation into law, it remains at the heart of a heated political battle. The strongest objection raised to the V-chip by its opponents is that it violates the First Amendment Rights of the broadcasters. They claim that the government is imposing a system of censorship that will lead to "blander" and "less dramatic" television. Representative Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who spearheaded the drive for the V-chip, argues that there is nothing in the legislation that limits the content of programs. He, and other supporters of the V-chip, say that the broadcasters will still be able to air any programming they wish. They will just have to accompany the programming with a rating that will help identify to parents the content of the programs. He emphasizes that it will be left to the parents to decide which programs they wish to view, not the government. Broadcasters respond by saying that there is simply too large of a volume of programs to rate all of them. As an example, they say that there are fewer than 600 movies that have to be rated each year by the Motion Picture Association of America, while there are over 600,000 hours of cable programming that would have to be rated each year. Supporters of the V-chip say that its purpose is to give parents control over the level of violence and sexual material their children watch on television. Critics, however, claim that the ratings will be too broad. They would not be able to intelligently choose for themselves which shows are acceptable and which are not. Critics argue that many shows such as cartoons and even the news could potentially be classified as "violent" and be blocked. In response to this argument, news and sports programs will be exempt from the ratings requirements. This creates it's own problems, though. How does Steinbeck use setting in the novel as a whole to convey important ideas about society and theme? Essay

Setting plays a pivotal role in Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’, and it is used frequently to portray central themes, ideas and moods throughout the book to the reader in a subtle understated way. He does this through, for example the setting of the book – which is on the ranch. As readers we don’t go anywhere other than the ranch (and the brush) which summarises the sense of seclusion and isolation enhanced by the town’s name of ‘Soledad’ meaning solitude. This shows an example of the setting being used to underline one of the key themes of isolation and loneliness throughout the whole book. Steinbeck applies this descriptive formula to other locations in the book like the bunkhouse and the barn. The bunkhouse is supposed to display the objective and ‘tool-like’ nature about the ranch, and also reveals facts about the lifestyles of the ranch hands on it. The bunkhouse is very elemental and the ‘bare necessities’ attributes it holds emphasises this tool like attitude towards the ranch hands. The description of the structure is that the walls were ‘whitewashed and unpainted’ – just a protective coating on the walls to keep it structurally intact, not for decoration, but for the necessities of keeping the structure whole. The windows, for example are described as ‘small’ and ‘square’, to cut the costs of expensive glass, and to hint at the idea of an enclosed space, like a prison, which signals the lack of hope associated with the itinerant workers, of which Lennie and George both are examples. But, all these cost saving measures add up to an attitude of utilitarianism – absolutely no excess or lavish ness. This theme can be associated with the migrants – who were treated as tools as they were in huge supply, with fewer job vacancies than job seekers. Each bed has an ‘apple box’ shelf – meaning that the shelves to house the migrant’s possessions have been created out of discarded apple crates. This shows the central theme of absolute cost cutting, as well as signalling the worker’s lack of possessions; they have only a few essential possessions because they move about all the time, and have no real opportunity to obtain and collect a large number of items. Crooks’ Room is another very clear example of Steinbeck using a setting to identify a central theme in his novel. Crooks’ room is a masterpiece of understatement, and its very nature shows how Crooks is different from the other ranch hands. The setting of Crook’s room in contrast to the bunkhouse shows that life is different for him because of society and because he isn’t an itinerant worker – he’s a permanent segregated worker. This segregation is obviously shown through the fact that his room is in a separate room from the other ranch hands, reflecting segregation laws at the time. His amount of possessions is larger in quantity to those of the itinerant worker or ranch worker’s, showing the fact he’s a more permanent worker than the others – ‘scattered about the floor were a number of personal possessions’. His loneliness is shown through a number of features in the room – many of his possessions are work related items, showing his work influence and the importance of work to him, and the loneliness of his character as work is more important than his livelihood. The close alignment with the horses also reflects the main theme of loneliness. The room itself is just a shed off of the horse barn, his bed was ‘a long box filled with straw’ much like a manger, his apple box contained ‘a range of medicine bottles, both for himself and for the horses’. All of this shows the loneliness of Crooks because of racism and segregation that at the time was the social norm; and perhaps Crooks was seen as being on a similar level of respect to the horses. The setting of Crooks and his room is a microcosm for the world – and the setting of the room therefore becomes a pivotal role in getting across these key themes. The setting of the ban in Chapter 5 is also significant for several reasons. Steinbeck’s description of the barn in Chapter 5 immediately follows the scene in which Curley’s Wife argues and tries to flirt with Crooks, Lennie and Candy in Crooks’ Room. This creates contrast to the previous scene’s atmosphere of argument and irritation, with the description of the light filtering through the barn’s cracks. It is a sunny, restful day for most of the men – a ‘Sunday afternoon’, ‘the lazy afternoon humming’. Instead of hours in the field, most of the workers are playing ‘horseshoes’ outside. This peaceful, crisp, soporific feeling is in contrast to the violent encounter between Lennie and Curley’s wife which occurs later in the chapter. The contrast between Lennie sitting in the coolness of the barn with his newly killed puppy contributes to the other view of the barn, and contributes to Steinbeck†™s light and dark motif or idea. The brush also plays a fundamental role in the microcosm of the book, extended metaphors and general themes across the novel. It shows the cycle of settings – all which happen on the ranch or in the brush – the novel ends where it starts. Despite this the values of the settings have changed. Instead of a place of sanctuary, the Garden of Eden, the pool is now a place of death. Instead of animals such as rabbits playing in the brush, the heron is now swallowing the water snake – devouring it. Instead of green leaves and a gentle breeze, there are brown dying leaves and a gush of wind – hallmarks of a storm. Instead of safety for Lennie, there is death, and for George, a future of loneliness without his companionship shared with Lennie. The key themes and motifs built up by previous scenes in the novel are tied up here – the microcosm of life, the loneliness, selfish, cruel brashness of the world. The fact that the cycle of settings is used, that they’re back in the brush at the end as they were in the beginning shows that nothing has changed for the better in George and Lennie’s life, much the same as itinerant workers just like them. It shows the microcosm of life – everyone is selfish and wants to make it on their own that no one actually in the end ends benefiting – in short, if this attitude is held, everyone’s a looser.
